Your test chair is a volunteer who spends many hours arranging for judges, making a schedule, preparing hospitality and filing reports with US figure Skating. Judges are also volunteers, who make time to come to our test sessions (some driving from as far away as Fort Collins and Colorado Springs) and spend hours in a cold rink to help you progress in your skating career. Other skaters and coaches make arrangements to be at the test session with the same goals you have, to pass the tests! Pleases be considerate of these volunteers, coaches, and skaters. Following these guidelines will help everyone have the most successful test session possible.
*Completely fill out Test Applicatioin, including USFSA number. Please do not expect the test chair to find your number for you.
*Completed application and fees nust be received at least 10 days prior to the test.
*PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR A TEST UNLESS YOU ARE FULLY READY TO TEST!! If your test isn't ready two weeks out, it probably won't be ready on test day. Caneling at the last minute causes havoc with the schedule, extra work for the test chair, is unfair to the other skaters and coaches, and is not respectful to the judges.
*If you have a special request, please let the test chair know when you submit your test form. Every effort will be made to accommodate your request, but we cannot guarantee that every request can be met.
*Once the schedule is posted, there will be no refunds for cancelled tests except with a written doctor's excuse. Credit will be given for a future test upon receipt of this written excuse.
*The schedule will be posted 4 days prior to the test. This schedule will also be posted on the website it is the skater's responsibility to check the schedule and arrive at the rink 45 minutes prior to their test time.
*Dance tests, Jr. and Sr. tests all require high level judges. Occassionally, these tests may have to be rescheduled if the appropriate judges are not available. Please understand these limitations should they occur.
*The test chair will e-mail confirmation upon receipt of test application (you must include your e-mail address on the application), if you do not hear from the test chair then it falls upon the applicant to make it known to the test chair that they would like to test.
**Adapted from University of Denver FSC test guidelines
As skaters progress and learn new skills, they will test, according
to the rules and regulations of U.S. Figure Skating,
in order to move up through the different levels.
Locations
Tests may be taken at either the Apex Center or at another rink. The tests at the Apex Center are organized by the Columbine FSC. In order for a skater to test at another rink, a permission form (see the Forms page) must be obtained from the CFSC Test chairperson.(click to e-mail test chair) Usually an e-mail from the test chair will suffice for permission from the club.
Test Schedule and Registration
Test dates are posted on the Bulletin Board. Our testing is usually
done on Thursday mornings and 8-10 tests per year are normally scheduled.
Registrations are due 10 days prior to the test date and forms may
be obtained at the front desk of the ice arena or on
the forms page. The fees vary, depending on the test type and
level. Once all registrations are in, the individual test times will
be posted on the bulletin board, usually the Monday before the Thursday
test.
Test Types
Skaters test in several areas, the primary two are: Moves-in-the-Field and Free Skate. The Moves-in-the-Field portion must be passed before the Free Skate test of the same level is attempted. A skater may choose to do only the Moves test or both the Moves and Free Skate tests at the same test session. Some skaters prefer to advance several levels in the Moves tests, but postpone the Free Skate tests, because they are not ready to compete at the higher levels. (A more detailed explanation for this is given in the next section.)
Additionally, skaters can test in Dance and Pairs.
If a skater does not pass a test, he or she must wait 28 days before he or she can retake the test.
Relationship to Competitions
Once skaters have passed a Free Skate test, they are committed to competing at that level (or one level higher) but cannot go lower. Passing a test does not necessarily mean that a skater will be competitive at that level, as tests usually contain much easier elements than are being performed during competitions.
